Yahoo Ramps Up Its Original News Content
Yahoo is currently investing in the development of its US news coverage by hiring journalists from titles such as The New York Observer and Washington Post to source and write original content for their website.
Until now, Yahoo News took most of its content from companies like Associated Press, Reuters and Agence France Presse. Their new move toward original content will see about a dozen journalists coming on board. Staff will reportedly create articles and video to complement stories on the site.
Head of Media at Yahoo, James Pitaro, told The New York Times, "My hopes are to continue to build a voice for our media properties and to replicate the success we have had in Yahoo Sports."
According to recent eBizMBA statistics, Yahoo News is the second most popular news site in the US when looking at a combination of inbound links, US traffic data from two sources and its ranking on Alexa. It currently trails CNN and is ahead of Digg, the New York Times website and USA Today.
