Retailers Positive as Mega Monday Reveals Christmas Shopping Fever

With today being dubbed 'Mega Monday', UK retailers have been expecting the busiest online shopping day of the year amid predictions of a record Christmas trading period.

This comes as welcome news for the retail industry, since figures have shown a 0.2% decline in November sales.

Nevertheless, Head of Retail at BDO, Don Williams said sales in December will outperform last year: "People will not cancel Christmas. They are just following the trend of the Christmas period getting later every year thanks to extended opening hours and better online shopping services, and the atrocious weather has just given them another reason to delay their festive shopping."

By the close of Mega Monday, online shopping sales are expected to reach £1bn - Visa expects 6.8 million online transactions within the next 24 hours alone.

Meanwhile, online retailer Ebay predicts that half of all UK online shoppers will visit its website this month, while John Lewis has already reported that last week was the third best week in sales it has ever seen and further expects an "unprecedented" level of customers using its click and collect service.
