Research Predicts Massive Consumer Spending On Christmas and Boxing Day

New research by online retail body IMRG predicts that Britons will spend over £550m online on Christmas and Boxing Day this year.

UK shoppers are expected to spend £186.4m on Christmas Day alone, and a massive £367.8m on Boxing Day, which is sure to give retailers a massive boost to their end-of-year profits.

This total online spend over the two-day period will represent a 12% year-on-year rise. Analysts say that the increased number of smartphone and tablet devices will be generating the bulk of this consumer demand.

IMRG's Chief Marketing and Communications officer, David J Smith, commented: "Shopping on Christmas Day might not appear to quite be in the Christmas spirit, it is worth considering that many of these sales could actually be associated with popular gifts people have received, such as downloadable content for MP3 players and Kindles."

In addition, research conducted in August by YouGov has forecasted that the UK's total online spend for 2011 will exceed £69bn. The retail giants Amazon, Argos and Tesco are currently topping the list of most popular online sellers.
