Most Search Popular Brands on the Web in 2010 Revealed

UK measurement firm revealed Experian Hitwise has revealed the brands most searched for on the web in 2010.

The findings saw Facebook at top position with 3.5% of all search engine queries, rising to 6% if misspellings and variations are taken into account. YouTube ranked second most-searched-for brand, its traffic grew 22% in 2010 and it now accounts for 1% of all web searches.

Top brands that followed, consecutively, were Ebay, Amazon, Argos, BBC, Autotrader, Sky, Next and Tesco.

Hitwise has said that while social sites reached the winning positions in 2010, it was also a good year for retailers. Half of the top ten brands were in the retail category and all the top retail brands received double-digit growth over the past year. Tesco saw particularly strong growth with a 23% increase in search popularity.

Research Director for Experian Hitwise, Robin Goad, commented: "We know that these social networks are extremely popular, but it's interesting to see how much impact brands like Facebook are having online against major retailers, news and media brands. The key for companies now is to make the most of the brand equity Facebook has and to ensure their own brands are represented well on sites like it."
