Google Loses Claim to Domain Name
Mediators of the National Arbitration Forum have dismissed a claim made by Google against Canadian company groovle.com demanding they transfer their domain name to it because it is too similar to theirs. The three judges appointed by the Forum refused the request, stating that the domain name is not similar enough to confuse people.
The judges also ruled against the Google claim that the Canadian company had no legitimate interest in the domain name and had registered it in 'bad faith'.
Google has made 64 similar such claims and this is only the second time they have been rejected. The first time they were unsuccessful was in 2004 with a company called froogles.com.
The management behind groovle.com have said their domain name has been in use for two years with no complaint from Google. The site itself offers users a way to create their own customised internet homepage. People can upload personal images onto their site and then use the page to launch their internet searches. Ironically, the site is powered by Google.
