Google and China to Resume Talks

Google and Chinese officials are set to resume talks about whether Google's China search engine will be able to perform without censorship. These talks began in January, when Google announced that its system had been infiltrated by Chinese hackers, who used the breach to filter politically sensitive search terms and monitor the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. This cyber attack has been traced back to two schools in China, although both the schools and the Chinese government denied involvement.

It is unclear if any progress has been made behind the scenes during this lull in official communication between the two parties. However, it is unlikely that Google will follow through on its January threat to leave the country. During the month that followed, Google did not shut down or curtail any of its operations, despite the fact that the censorship on its search engine was still in place. It also continued to pour investment dollars into Chinese businesses.
