Free Android Version of Mobile Game Angry Birds Sees Major Download Success
The mobile game Angry Birds, created by Rovio, has reported more than 1 million downloads in a day since it launched its free Android version on the app store Getjar on Friday.
Getjar is an independent app store which hosts cross-platform mobile apps and uses its App It link to direct users to the app version that is most appropriate for their handset. It is giving away premium mobile apps with the aim of proving a business model that relies on their charging separate brands for premium placement of applications.
Head of Rovio Mobile, Peter Vesterbacka, said, "The App It link means we can also cross-promote our Symbian and Android versions without the need to send people to multiple places to get their favourite game."
Patrick Mork, Getjar CMO, commented further, "Android is one of our fastest growing platforms, with downloads up 500% since April." Angry Birds itself is one of the most successful mobile games, having achieved more than 6.5m downloads on the Apple App Store since its launch in December 2009.
