BBC Review Highlights Need to Streamline Online Content
The review, which started in July, is part of the BBC Trust's aim to re-shape itself with "appropriate limits" on its activities and ambitions. It will see a streamlining of their online services which will see a number of their sites being scrapped.
Sir Michael Lyons, chairman of the BBC Trust which regulates the broadcaster, has asked director general Mark Thompson to discover, "Beyond the core offer of news, sport, education, children's and the iPlayer which parts of the online service are essential to the BBC's mission and which could be stopped". Following Thompson's findings, the industry will be given the opportunity to contribute to the review as part of a public consultation early next year.
The Trust wants to define a clear boundary between online resources which act as an extension of BBC shows and its standalone online content. They hope that clearer boundaries will help their online service to provide even greater depth and authority in core areas.
