Apple Reports Double in Sales Revenue for Second Quarter
Following from record iPhone sales, the second quarter saw Apple's earnings nearly doubled.
Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, commented: "With quarterly revenue growth of 83% and profit growth of 95% we're firing on all cylinders. We will continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year."
A total of 18.7 million iPhones were sold by Apple in the period, a substantial increase from the 8.75 million it sold in the previous year.
Sales of the iPad tablet however were lower than expected - the iPad 2 was launched in mid-March, but shipments dropped to 4.7 million, down from 7.3 million in the first quarter.
It has been admitted by Apple's Chief Operating Officer, Tim Cook that their iPad 2 is "the mother of all backlogs" and has added that the company intends to ramp up production to prevent further delays.
Apple's Mac computers saw an increase in sales of 28% to 3.76 million, although their iPods saw a downturn of 17% in the same quarter, with sales totalling 9.02 million.
The tablet and Smartphone market has become fiercely competitive after the launch of dozens of new devices this year - in this sector Google's Android platform is currently winning the race against Apple's iOS in Europe.
